This section is designed to explain more about MMA for both people new to the sport and to the highly experienced fighter and fan!
Why is MMA done in a Cage?
Firstly MMA is not always done in a cage. In mainstream competitions it is done in either a cage or a boxing style ring, but it can also be done on a matted area.
Is fighting in a Cage illegal?
Far from it! Fighting in the cage is very tightly controlled and subject to strict rules and insurance guidlines.
Why fight in a Cage?
Quite simply it's a lot safer to fight in a cage than a boxing ring when competing. The cage actually serves to protect both of combatants from falling out of the ring during the bout. The cage is not there to trap the fighters, but to save them from accidental injury.
Why has Cage Fighting suddenly sprung up?
Firstly, at Trojan MMA we do not do 'Cage Fighting'. Yes our events do involve highly trained martial artists testing themselves in the sporting arena, the safest arena being a cage, but we do not like the term cage fighting as it conjours up the wrong idea of a sport that is full of disciplined and dedicated sports men and women. Secondly, Cage Fighting... or Mixed Martial Arts as it should be known hasn't sprung up recently at all. In Ancient Greece the Olympics featured the combat sport of Pankration - a martial art / sport that consisted of striking, grappling and wrestling. Since then, there have been many forms of mixed discipline combat sport events, otherwise known as Mixed Martial Arts events - including Boxing World Champions taking on Wreslters or Martial Artists. The most famous Mixed Martial Artist was Bruce Lee - who premiered his own style of fighting 'Jeet Kune Do' and showed its ability against other styles.
Why is it suddenly so popular?
It has become a lot more mainstream due to the ever changing and increasing media coverage, made more possible and accessible through the internet, DVD, eventually TV. Thus what was origionally a small scale lesser known event where martial artists of a wide range of disciplines, keen to test themselves against the best competitors from a variety of arts - became a highlycommercial sport with big family brands sponsoring the events.
What is UFC?
UFC is essentially an event promoter and an organisation. They are biggest an the best in any form of martial arts show and as martial artists and martial arts fans we should recognise what they have done for the sport. There are of course a lot of other martial arts event promoters and organisations that host competitions and championships, however UFC stands head and shoulders above the rest.
What is Trojan MMA?
We are an event promoter and event organiser, who aims to bring fans the best MMA in the UK. There are a lot of MMA promoters in the UK however from the very start, we have always wanted to do something a little bit different. With top security at our events, we ensure the highest safety of the fans at our events. At many MMA events in the UK, crowd fights have broken out. At our events this is not tolerated and much like Football matches we arrange a police presence to ensure everyones safety and enjoyment. We also believe that as an event organiser it is our job to really put on a show for our fans. For us its not enough to just find two people willing to fight each other, we want something more than that. The most exciting fighters, the most exciting entertainment.
